So I'm creating a homebrew version of Richemulot from Van Richten's Guide and I want to know. How do I get the characters from where they are now to the diseased rat ridden cities of Richemulot? I don't really know how I would incorporate the mists of the dread domain into my work and I'm just befuddled at this point.
It could be as simple as they walk down the wrong alley and boom, the Mists take them. Or it could be as complicated as an evil, unearthly power marks them for ill deeds, does a crazy ritual, and drags them kicking and screaming into the domain of dread to fulfill some unspecified purpose. It's up to you.
You could even have the party just...be from Richemulot. They were born there. They've never known anywhere else. Anyone who's tried to leave the city just got lost in the Mists, never to be heard from again.
I don't want them to be from Richemulot, simply because I want the disease to be something that their characters have never even seen before and from a narrative point if they were from Richemulot it wouldn't hold as much weight as seeing the effects of it without truly grasping what the diseases can do.
I think that’s the beauty of Ravenloft and the mists. The mist can just come down at random and lift away again revealing that the players are in another realm.
I’m going to run a few other modules before my first Ravenloft module, but I’m going to sprinkle some Ravens in the Sword Coast modules as foreshadowing, and perhaps “give” the players some prophetic dreams about mists and ravens before I have them head into the mist.
