Hello. Well, I have my first one shot as a DM in 2 weeks, and I have this idea that I came out with my friend. The party wakes up in the tower, but they don't know how or when they get there. Every room can shift (one is small, the other looks like a garden), and when you look outside the window, each player sees sth else (memory from the past, or a different plane). The main idea is that the "patron" of the warlock (played by my friend/dm who knows about the whole plot), is the entity that is trapped (in the gem or some artifact) inside that tower, and tricks the warlock into coming here with his party by whispering to his ear, creating a fake illusionary village, and leading him to the place that teleports the whole party to another plain where the tower is. The idea of the one shot is that they will unknowingly free him, which will lead to the next adventure.
I want to ask what you think about the whole idea and do you have any advice about what kind of patron we should choose for my friends Warlock? Or maybe it will be easier to create one?
To me this could go 2 ways. You could go for more of a horror route and go with a Great Old One patron or an Archfiend of some sort that feeds off the torment of what it is about to put them through in order to give the patron the strength that allows them to be freed.
The other option (and the one I'd personally use) is an Arch Fey. Patrons of the Arch Fey even get something sort of similar to what you've described as their capstone ability (See Below):
"Dark Delirium
Starting at 14th level, you can plunge a creature into an illusory realm. As an action, choose a creature that you can see within 60 feet of you. It must make a Wisdom saving throw against your warlock spell save DC. On a failed save, it is charmed or frightened by you (your choice) for 1 minute or until your concentration is broken (as if you are concentrating on a spell). This effect ends early if the creature takes any damage.
Until this illusion ends, the creature thinks it is lost in a misty realm, the appearance of which you choose. The creature can see and hear only itself, you, and the illusion.
You must finish a short or long rest before you can use this feature again."
