So I have a player who wants to play with the celestial warlock and I'm thinking of switching the patron on the player secretly to Strahd once they pass into his real, but before I go through with this I want some feedback on this idea.
Of course this will mean Strahd will know where the party is and he may be able to use this to make the PC a pawn without him knowing.
I'm not sure that's quite how pacts work. Also, while the Warlock may or may not be cut-off from their patron while in Ravenloft, it's not like their power is diminished in any way.

Well, you can still use Strahd in other ways. It's pointed out in the adventure that he tends to intercept divine communication like if someone cast Commune or Augury or the like. So it's not like you can't have him mess with the party. It's just that it seems odd to have him subsume the role of the Warlock's patron without your Warlock knowing about it or having any input into the situation.

It does sound cool, but perhaps rather than actually replacing the patron have Stradh acting as a sort of intercept as Metamongoose suggests. Perhaps the player used to dream every night of their patron - every night the dream would have the character approaching a Celestial palace and through a door into the warm embrace of their patron, but then this first night they open the palace doors and Stradh is there staring at them and smiling. They run out and see the palace is actually his castle. So any time the player would have contact with their patron and receive guidance and comfort, they now find only fear and the ever smiling villain. Their powers and mechanics are unchanged, but let them fear they have been abandoned.

Thoughts?

Just thought it would be a cool idea, showing that Strahd has all the power in that realm, but I get what you mean.

I plan on him messing with them as much as possible.
I make stuff on DMs Guild, DriveThruRPG, & Storytellers Vault. I stream things on Twitch.

Yes yes yes!! That is what I wanted.
