Going to start running Strixhaven soon, and thinking of ways to flesh things out.
Tuition is only mentioned very briefly in the book, a references that winning Mage Tower comes with a prize of 400gp each, half the price of a year's tuition. (So 800gp).
I'd like to include tuition as another motivator for the players. I have a few ideas I'll layout below, looking for more suggestions and feedback to make things interesting.
Tuition to be 800gp per year, due at the start of the year.
First year's tuition is already paid, players can write into their backstory how that happened.
Options for paying tuition for the rest of the years:
Scholarships - ace 1,2, or all three exams in a year and pass the ones you don't ace to earn a scholarship for next year: 150gp for one ace, 400gp for two, and full ride 800gp for all three. Fail any exam and you do not qualify.
Noble background - Your house pays your tuition, unless you fail more than one exam in year or do something that reflects poorly on your House's reputation.
Urchin background - You receive grants that pay your tuition, unless you fail more than one exam in a year.
Campus Job - As laid out in the book, earn 5gp per week you can use towards tuition, instead of taking a second extracurricular activity.
Treasure - Sell some of the treasure found in the various encounters to pay your way. I may include extra treasure beyond what is listed to make this more feasible.
Loans - If the PC has a good relationship with an NPC of means they can get a loan with a reasonable rate. Otherwise they can use a loan shark that will charge more and could come after them if they fail to make a payment.
As said, feedback on the above, and/or others ideas are appreciated!
I have a thing in my Strixhaven game where students need funding for research projects (hence a motivation for adventuring in free time)-- they need to find a balance between spending time gathering funding and spending time studying/tinkering on their experiment.
One element to that is that I had a guy at the school who was a government representative offering students additional funding if they commit to focusing their research on projects with military value, in order to give players the moral dilemma of potentially creating something dangerous and handing it over to the military in exchange for their academic future.
