I'm gearing up for Dragon Heist. One of my PC's wants to backstory as an assassin working as a bartender/some other job. Please give me some thoughts on this. I thought about making them a server at the portal, but I don't know how to make them a spy without.... oh, wait... I have the solution. Make them an existing low level contractor for the Zents (through other channels).
maybe as a very low level assassin they are tasked by a trainer/handler/guild (or else challenging themselves solo, but what level 1 guy is already so cool and accomplished?) with scouting. this low-level shtick might be to apply for a staff position at an ale hall, tavern, inn, hotel, etc and memorize faces, exits, slang, routines, location of the knife block, access to a cold locker, etc. they may or may not take the job depending on what's left to learn (most places being not at all more complex than a bar and a basement). there might be an assassination in a similar setting one day or maybe part of an escape plan involves blending in to quickly change costume. make a plan or fall to someone else's, that's what handler is always saying.
and that's what they're doing there on that fateful day. not stalking prey, just some mundane scouting. up to you two whether the character was planning to apply, waiting for a scheduled interview, or maybe following around an npc to "learn the ropes" as a new hire which brings them into contact with the party.

Thanks. I'd still like other opinions please.
Since the Zhentarim are one of the factions actively at play in the adventure, and joining the faction of the Zhentarim opposed to Manshoons faction is a possibility, it might be better to have them be an aspiring member/contractor of the Zhentarim, particularly if you are starting them at level 1. It would make more sense for a level 1 to not be a member yet, and it could play nicely in to the story, putting them in the middle of the conflict between the different factions, wanting to prove themselves, but allying with one faction will put them at odds with the other.

unhappy at the way in which we lost individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
tell them you don't like features disappeared quietly in the night: provide feedback!
