The tortured sprit of the sister of one of my party members (Ice Druid) needs to be defeated (read: freed).
My original idea was a banshee, however they are now lvl 7 so that wouldn't' be much of a challenge.
Now I am thinking of some type of roper mechanic that pulls the party member in, and when they are within a certain distance bad things happen. Kinda like a black hole type mechanic.
You could still do a banshee. Just max out the HP or give it a boost above that. Maybe add some additional actions or a simple lair action or 2. Nothing over the top.
The great thing about DMing is that the world is your oyster! You can make a kobold that can take down a tarrasque if you really wanted to. Probably shouldn't, but you certainly could.
One trick I use for "boss" type monsters is to find one I like and if the CR is too low, I boost it's HP and give it a couple legendary actions to help buff it. If the CR is too high, I usually drop it's AC a bit and sometimes drop a die of damage on it's bigger attacks (instead of 5 d6 rolling only 4) Also, if I put in something that looks too tough and find, mid combat, I didn't dress it down enough (looking like a party wipe) it may suffer a major injury from a blow, lowering it's AC more, or it may die sooner that expected as I erase 50 HP from it or some such.
Balancing important fights, to me, is a delicate dance, as I really want the fight o push them to the edge and in doing so, a couple bad rolls can really put it in jeopardy quickly. I can always increase my monster's HP to drag the fight on and counter a series of good party rolls, but a series of failed saves or similar can really put the party in a bad spot that I didn't want with my slightly OP monster lol. I have a decent number of homebrewed monsters I have and will continue to use, which are just bigger, tougher versions of monsters whose abilities I liked.

Well, yeah. :)
But looking for ideas to help narrow down which oyster! XD
Q: Which monster should I use?
A: Yes
As far as monsters go:
Oh those are goond ones!
Someone else suggested a charm type effect. So the thing pulls you in, charms you, then sends you out to attack your friends.

Maybe she's a boneclaw or eidolon? There's some interesting lore that might add depth to you plot (if needed).
