Just finished SKT with the group, they group was given the Claw by the Storm Giants as a gift for rescuing the king ... for what is clearly a setup of the end fight with the ancient blue dragon. The problem ... DC 15. The ancient blue dragon in question has a +15 Con Save (can not do worse than a 16 Con Save.. no crit failure on saving throws = can't possible work).
That feels really lame. There are two other properties and the player wearing it did enjoy a half damage on the lighting breath in round 1, but the third ability that takes 8 hours to setup a trap, while interesting isn't ever going to be used in this fight as it is heavily setup so the players will be trying to invade the dragon's liar rather than luring her out.. but maybe a party heavily focused on that idea could have made use of it.
Anyway ... WotC custom makes an item for this module then gives it to the players right before this fight, then sets up the stats so the item will always fail in the fight. What a trap!
(As written the end fight is "easy" with all the help the party gets, and I did change that fight to more of the player's help distracts her adult dragon children and stone army while they try and get a 1 on 1 with the Dragon so I guess as written the fact the claw is a Trap isn't a big deal as she is going to get curb stomped by the Storm giants anyway? But yeah.. that claw bothers me. If I had realized the mismatch sooner I would have changed the DC of the item or reduced her con save)
Edit: Overall I did really enjoy running SKT, I did follow a lot of advice I found online to flush it out as there is a lot of "its an open world so you figure it out" feel to the module as written.
