See I’m relatively new to dming and recently finished my roadmap for our groups first campaign. Throughout it the group is playing the part of a hired rescue squad paid to get a goddess titania out of the clutches of the evil god of the underworld. After that they realize all of the gods have had their memories alerted by some kind of magic as if that mystery wasn’t enough just as they figure out about the mind control they get word of strange magics coming from the underworld. Turns out one of the underworld god’s prisoners got out and he wants everyone dead as for the underworld god he’s up and disappeared leaving behind two notes for the other gods and one for titania. The note to Titania reveals he was actually her father and new the other gods would try to kill her for her potential so he made the choice to rebel against the other gods and it was titania’s mother who made everyone forget the reason for his betrayal making them think he simply turned with no reason.
my question is knowing that I’m trying to think of evil things besides just fighting the underworld god could have done to both seem evil but also use as an excuse to train his daughter so he knows she’ll be safe when he’s gone? Like what’s to far?
The only thing that should define "What is too far?" is the possible over-powering dangers to the PCs. When it comes to plot lines, you should keep things relatively simply though, as the PCs are concerned. Behind the curtain plot should be kept minimum as it does not focus on the PCs - which is where you should be focusing the story.
My questions would be: "What level are the characters?" "Why is this important to the character's point of view?" "How can I add this in without overbearing the PCs with backstory?"
