Does anyone else require an Arcana check along with the identify spell for high end magical items, items with magical protections on them, sentient magical items etcetera.
I had a little pushback from a player after the party used detect magic after a battle and picked up all the items that “glowed”. After they collected the items the wizard in the party cast Galder’s Tower and then set down to identify everything by ritually casting Identify a few times. All of the items were identified per RAW, except one ring. For that ring I stated “its magical but your are not sure why or how” to that a different player… not the wizard, took some issues, based on the rules for the identify spell.
Generally speaking I don’t have an issue with any of the above as far and the ritual casting of Identify and how it works, I don’t have a problem with identifying a random +1 sword, or other “normal” magical item that has no other significance in this manner. But it seems a little cheesy when it comes to magical items that are tied to a quest or are of some greater significance to a quest or overall story than just random magical loot.
Moving forward in this campaign... after some discussion with the players.... I think the plan is to require and arcana check by the wizard when identifying “special” magical items, information they get will be dependent on a roll. So in the above situation a high roll will garner more information then “its magical but you are not sure why”
Arcana checks should be usable for common magical items. The higher the rarity the higher the DC for the check.
Identify should tell everything except if it's cursed or not up until legendary status..
For what you're describing, I think Legend Lore is what you're looking for. Just let your player taking issues know there's a reason Legend Lore is in the game. It's a fifth level spell that's expensive to cast for a reason.
in campaign 2 of critical role, the Matt didn’t allow the dodecahedron to reveal any or all of the properties of the artifact. I agree with @Rathkryn that legend lore is the spell for that.
Third call for limitations of identify and use of legend lore.
They are even being generous -- it's a first level spell. I wouldn't let it tell you much about anything other than common or uncommon magic items until much higher level (rare at 5th level, very rare at 9th, legendary at 13th).
I will also point out that no matter what some spell description says, if a DM says it doesn't work, it doesn't work. And given that DMs generally only do that for fancy or important stuff, they should sit down and think about what that means, rather than get fussy about some metagame thing.

Items that just give a +x on AC, Dmg/Attack etc. can easily be identified by my players, anything that has triggerable magic abilities needs to be studied and requires one or more sucessful arcana checks over time.

Just wondering how other DMs handle this.
