I've been searching for an answer to this but have not yet been able to find one. I'm running SKT and one party member is a gloom stalker. Entering the dripping caves the book states its in total darkness and ogre and goblins use only dark vision to see. Thus the gloom stalker will be completely invisible to those who rely on dark vision to see. Is the gloom stalker able to turn this feature off so the party can see them for the benefit of spells and such or would checks have to be made to see if they can guess where the gloom stalker is if they can't speak.
My entire party has dark vision so they shouldn't need light sources when entering these places. So is the gloom stalker invisible no matter what at all times while in total darkness or can they choose to be seen by others.
I was thinking that maybe they receive a special cloak that makes them invisible while in darkness instead so they can remove the hood and be revealed to the party so its not just an invisible man type situation. Any thoughts or if there's sage advice I couldn't find showing the answer to this that would be great too thanks.
the wording is "you are invisible" not "you can be invisible" so i think by raw you can't turn it off, but as with all rules dm gets final call

yeah, its powerful i mean almost every other invisibility ability ends when you attack or cast a spell, this one is just "it's dark so i'm invisible forever"

RAW, the character is invisible from anyone, including party members, who are using darkvision to see in darkness.
Light sources including dim light, devils sight, true seeing, blind sight, tremor sense and likely other abilities would negate the invisibility.
This does mean that the invisible gloomstalker can't be targeted by spells that require seeing him, both harmful and beneficial. The party may know where the gloomstalker is but they can't see him, even if he is unconscious.
As far as use in play goes, it is a powerful ability in darkness but I haven't found it to be overpowered. In the games I have either run or played with a gloomstalker it worked fine. Other DMs may have a different opinion for whatever reasons.
