I’m curious if it be a fun thing to add . Like Easter eggs from games and shows we watch. Though spin it to fit into the DnD world. If as well making characters from real life mystery. I’m new to being a dungeon master. I’m learning a ton of stuff every day. As well watching stuff on YouTube. As well looking for things to make the story and world a bit more fun and engaging. So far my players are enjoying what I’m putting together. Aswell any advise to help make things a bit more fun. In the world for my players.
alright. i have a chase scene planned with a cretaure that can make portals. there would be a lot of easter eggs, including but not limited to, a universe hopping character i made, the actual dnd table and us, various buildings from everywhere and so much more!

Fun Fact: i gain more power the more you post on my forum threads. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
I actually do this ALL the time, if for my own amusement if nothing else, and I think my players catch them MAYBE 10% of the time, lol. In a recent session I needed to name and flesh out a shop keeper on the fly when the party engaged with him more than expected and named him Rickus Harrisonus (Its a reference to the show Pawn Stars for those that don't know). Sadly no one got it!
Oh yeah, I like easter eggs being a thing. I haven't done many of them in my current campaign though. But, I do have an "adventurers' bazaar" area coming up, where I'll be using the players' tokens from previous campaigns as NPC adventurers.
You know your players best. There are people who are so into immersion that they don't want anything from the real world breaking it.
Everyone else likes Easter Eggs. So use them.
How I do it is explain the characters are speaking Common while we players are speaking English. So if someone brings up anything real world their character is saying whatever the D&D equivalent is. For example, the well known Weird Al Yankovic might have a troll bard equivalent.
The thing about Easter eggs in published products is that people have the opportunity to go over a given scene again and again, finding all the hidden things, and that doesn't work for personal games. Rather, in a private game they're usually more like subtle jokes, and the question is whether the players will notice.
My experience is that most players don't mind putting some elements like that, just don't overdo it, and don't let it distract from all the other things a DM should be doing.
