I might just be stupid, but are rules for calculating a homebrew monster’s CR totally absent in the 2024 rules? The 2014 rules has a complete list of calculations to rate a monster’s CR. But that doesn’t exist in the 2024 core rule books.
There are things like monster conversion tables, but nothing like the 2014 rules. Is that an oversight by WotC? Or am I stupid and just missed them somewhere?
No, you're right. They didn't include any guidelines for homebrewing monsters or calculating a CR in 2024, other than a very brief mention in the DMG which is basically just "reskin existing monsters".
Which does suck.
Technically no reason why the rules in the 2014 DMG can't be used, though don't know how that holds up against the 'new philosophy' of monsters in 2024. Not sure the old rules were that exact either - there was always a degree of playtesting required - but it would be nice to have some kind of guidance. I mean, they must have had some set of guidelines they followed themselves when creating the new MM?

I did some spot checking here. Higher CR monster are somewhat more powerful than the DMG rules, but it's not dramatic. A big part of the new philosophy is that they replaced a lot of resistances with just giving the monster more hit points.
