Morning all. New to DnDBeyond from Roll20 and about to start a new campaign. I'm using AboveVTT extension for the gameplay due to some current limitations on DnDBeyond basic. I've built the maps and added fog of war for the areas that the characters can't yet see (side note - how much easier is it in DnDBeyond!). My question is whether the characters will be able to see the tokens in the fog? Do I need to hide the tokens and reveal them when the fog is lifted in a room, or does fog cover the tokens and auto reveal when the fog is removed?
Secondly - is there an easy way to see the players view? Do I need to add a player myself and if I do is this player in god mode since I'm logged in as DM?
And if you have the time - as a DM do you bother adding walls, doors, windows and lighting? Or just use fog to hide and reveal detail?
Morning! and welcome to DND Beyond :) Using fog of war for your maps in DND Beyond is really simple actually. So to answer ( I hope I'm doing this right), you will want to place your monster tokens first in the areas they will be in. You will want to use the Hide/Reveal action first because yes, they will see the monster right away when lifting the Fog. Whether you use the paint tool to reveal as you go or all the way. So you hide them first, and then place your fog of war. Clicking on the monster and clicking on the hide/reveal action will then reveal them to your party. If you don't hide them first, yes lifting the fog will reveal them right away. Unless that is what you want to happen in whatever scenario you are running.
Viewing the players view is simple to toggle back and forth. But I do not recommend it. I found that it changes for the players and reveal's the DM's side. You do need to add the Tokens of your players first and then they will have access to them and be able to move them how they wish. They are not in God mode.
Lastly, adding walls, doors, windows etc helps to build the atmosphere of the area. I certainly do, because it helps put the players in the right "mood" so to speak. Even when describing it, the theatre of the mind can only do so much. But again, this is a personal preference. Try it out with and without, then you will get to see/hear your players reactions. Although there are times when I am pressed for time and just go simple too. I hope you have fun!!

I am a DM and regular player. I created a group for my local community called Roll for Initiative. We play every Wednesday and Thursday night at a local game store, that has been excellent with us. We have our own Discord group that also is a hosting area for local DM's to use as well.
Thanks for the quick and informative reply. I think I get what you are saying - my plan is for the fog to conceal all the monsters until a player enters a room, and then reveal the room, monsters and all, using the paint tool reveal. In that case I take it that there is no need to hide the monster tokens?

Hello, sorry to revive this thread but i have searched around for some time now and cannot seem to find any solid answer. I was having trouble with the hide/reveal button. Despite hiding a token it remains visible to my players. Is this intentional? Is the saturating merely meant to convey the intention of hiding whilst leaving it visible to my players? Or am I doing something wrong?
Following as my game came to a screeching halt when my players could see tokens despite being fogged over. Made sure each token did NOT have the reveal in fog toggled on.

Are you using the VTT in real space or do your players have a separate instance open? sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but it has to be ruled out. If the players are seeing the DM map, hidden stuff will not disappear it will just be greyed out, that way the DM can continue to edit it. When using AboveVTT in a physical space with people gathered around I had to have someone else log in to DNDBeyond on a different web browser (one on firefox, one on chrome) so that I could have the DM Map on my laptop screen and the player map on a second monitor (TV).
I have my own dumb question... is there a way to set AboveVTT to automatically remove the Fog of War as the players walk through it? I don't mind removing it manually, but I'd rather not have to, that way i can focus on other things while the players move their tokens.
