My table is part way through Rise Of Tiamat and they are in DIDERIUS Crypt. Almost to confronting the Yuan-Ti and Varram.
I need to work in a new player to this adventure and I am not sure the smoothest way to do it based on where they are. The new character is a War Forged Artificer.
This is his brief backstory. Iron was built during the war for combat but after the fighting ended a new purpose was flung in the Smiths Guild. More than just a weapon, Iron became both protector and craftsman, blending steel and magic at the forge. He carry the guild’s name with pride, standing as a shield for their allies and a living symbol of their craft
I am not familiar with Rise Of Tiamat, but as a prisoner makes the most sense. His back story of being a "Shield" supports that as he was the last man out on a "suicide mission" of allowing all allies to escape.
Could he have been found in an actual cell? Maybe forgotten/abandoned or not?
Could he be made inanimate like a statue as a prize to the victors. The PCs will need to figure out how to reanimate him. Not sure of the PCs levels (could always use that old stars war movie where Hans Solo was encased in a material for transport and the machine to reanimate him is nearby).
Could be actively being transported and PCs haves a fight with the guards and captures him.
Being a prisoner can limit to the gear the new PC has. But then there could be a prize room that is used to outfit all of the PCs.
Prisoner is kind of the classic way. An alternative way can be just to say, who, Bob? He was always here. Let’s get on with the adventure.
I know many people don’t like that version, because it can break immersion, and they say retcon is a bad word. And they’re not necessarily wrong. That’s a preference for lots of tables; I’m not trying to argue one way or another is better.
But it definitely also works and is an option to just slot in the new character and go from there. It’s much faster and easier, and probably a bit less contrived than the prisoner-who-joins-the-party route.

Also, ask the players. They might have some ideas.
Prisoner works, survivor of another group works. A way to short-circuit the common "well, how do we know we can trust you" roleplaying is establish that one or more of the PCs know the new character already, and give them some way (perhaps a one-use magic item) to bring them in.

All ideas are welcomed.

Great ideas thank you
