I wanted a paladin of treachery as one of my bbegs. He runs a bandit gang, and I wanted him to be a dangerous encounter. nothing easy, my players are just beginning so I don't plan on them meeting him until level 5-7, there are five of them altogether excluding npc companions. (Which they have) What level should this bandit paladin be? I was thinking level 20 or maybe 13?
To be honest, if you build him using player character classes, he probably won't last very long. Player classes are designed to have stupidly low HP compared to equivalent monsters: they're all "glass cannons." I'd suggest putting his "offense" around that of a 10th level paladin, maybe a bit more, but multiplying (maybe doubling?) his hit points and surrounding him with weak bandit flunkies.
