I'm prepping to run my first ever campaign for a group of more experienced players than me. It's for a local club, so it's going to be set at 12 sessions, roughly 3 hours long each. Is it too much to have them level up each round?
Generally speaking - yes. The players will not have enough playtime to learn and grow with their characters, as they'll constantly be unlocking new feats and abilities. If any session time is spent helping players further build out these levels, this becomes even more exaggerated. You can get the first few levels in that quick (or just start them off at higher levels to begin with) and take it easier from that point onward.
If you have the sessions already planned out, go by the final boss. Make sure they are going to be the appropriate level for that fight and then divide up the leveling accordingly so there’s steady progress.
I’d agree with sedge about not going too quick. If they are experienced players, though, you could probably start them at a higher level to make it work.
