Hello fellow DM's so the next big fight is putting my group of 7 level 12's against 14 Minotaur in a tight space cavern, I want to add a little surprise and that is where I am having a hard time. Anyone come up with a good puzzle they have to solve during battle? The last fight I had with them I did through them for a loop where a device at every top of initiative would cycle up in damage so it went 1d4, 2d6, 3d8, 4d10 and end on 5d12. So I am looking for something like that but maybe in a puzzle form, choose wrong or something and take damage the entire party. Anyone have anything they can help or suggest? Thanks for your time.
Minotaur’s are weakened in tight spaces because they can’t use their charge ability. Take that into account when you “size” the challenge. You can make one of the Minotaurs a cleric And give one of them, their leader, a couple of extra HD and an extra attack to balance that out. And you can also give them ranged weapons too.
Maybe you can turn the cavern into a maze? Have the Minotaurs withdraw and turn down two Y’s in the maze so that the party has to find them and is ambushed a second time? Just because they’re not very intelligent that doesn’t mean they aren’t cunning enough to use a natural maze as their base.
