So earlier today my brain started thinking of a an idea for a campaign, (this takes place in the forgotten realms but the terrain has changed), Tiamat has escaped Avernus, Lolth has left the abyss, all other imprisoned entities have left their prisons and a war has begun that depending on the outcome could forever change the world. Everyone has a stake in this war for the world (I'm planning on it being a 1-20 level campaign or even further). And I need help figuring out all the sides. Also a quick note I am changing a few things like making githzerai lawful good. Any suggestions on which races would align themselves. (also can you tell me if this is a good idea because sometimes things sound better in my head.)
I think that something very worth looking at is the struggle that has plagued the D&D canon multiverse since before good and evil were even a thing. Law versus chaos. There is the Blood War still, which is the eternal war between demons and devils, but even angels often would rather ally themselves with devils than with a chaotic good force. Law versus Chaos is what the multiverse was built on. It's as built into the concept of dungeons and dragons as rolling dice.
Small side note, I was wondering what you meant by even further than 1-20. Do you just mean the epic boons or what? I'm just curious.
I think it sounds cool. Idk if i would align things by race. But maybe by factions. This might even give you better opportunities for double agents since it won't be that obvious that a certain race is aligned a certain way. You can also have factions that want to restore balance so they may need to make alliances and break them. You can look into certain gods that are in charge of maintaining the natural order of things who are typically neutral and are sort of forced to become the "good" in a way, because all the other sides have gone to the extreme. (ok, this is sounding too similar to what is going on in the world now a days)
