I would like to have my party of 6 encounter a little girl wearing a dress. She is obviously distressed and keeps saying a monster wont let her go. Eventually the party will deduce this is her dress as a wide grin spreads across its ruffled surface. I originally got this idea from a picture "Mimic Dress by Kappacca on DeviantArt". I plan to keep the stats completely the same as the regular mimic with the addition of a trait, Unlucky Hostage. Here's what I have so far "The young girl wearing this mimic disguised as a dress is in a perilous situation. Any attack roll that exceeds the mimic's AC by 5 or more puts her at risk of being hit. Roll a d20, on a roll of X or lower she takes damage instead"
My questions for you are: What do you think of this, would you make any changes? What should X be?
I would decide what types of damage to make effective or dangerous, make it into a bit of a puzzle.
Piercing Damage- Deals damage to both mimic and hostage.
Bludgeoning/Slashing Damage- Deals damage to mimic and half damage to hostage.
Psychic Damage- Only hits the mimic.
Fire Damage- Deals damage to both mimic and hostage. Mimic reacts by clenching tighter and attacking the girl.
Cold Damage- Deals damage to both mimic and hostage. Mimics adhesive property is removed for one round, allowing a better chance at removing the hostage.
Make the thing that hurts or doesn't hurt the girl their choice rather than dice roll based. They'll feel more clever if they succeed and won't go 'well, that was unlucky' if they don't.
Very good point and that solves my worries of PCs freak out, attack, crit, and now I have to explain how they just cleaved this little girl in half. Like you said that should add more strategy and thought than hoping dice rolls turn out just right. Thanks.
