First time dm of a dnd campaign here. Just want to relate me experience on mashing up icespire and lost mines for some new dnd players!
I picked up icespire day one and mashed it into our on going list mines campaign. We weren't to far into so thought it be great and really wanted to use sidekicks. They just got finished taking care of the red brand gang when I started using it.
They player love the quest board. It's really all they have been focusing on. Which is great for just running icespire. But with the lost mine settup they have an issue focusing on the big bad black spider and finding rock seeker. I've had a few random encounters where I was able to give out more details on what they should be doing to find rockseeker. But they love the quest board to much lol. They're currently on the way to butter skull ranch. And they just hit the town of conyberry. Lvling up to 3rd level after a encounter with 6 orcs.
They know where rockseeker is and know the location of cragmaw castle. But they just want to quest out the board. Seems it give them a better sense of urgency then me trying to direct them to rockseeker. Which I think is more have an issue with me telling then anything and I'm a bit worried that they're on the way to over lvling thinking bout halving the exp moving forward since im not using milestones.
Just wanted to talk bout it here and see everyone's thoughts on it. Have you tried this yet? Any tips on give them some urgency to follow a bit more of the lost mines plot? Or maybe tips and slowing down exp progression. They're loving it so far so I'm not to worried bout it and I'm pretty good at adapting to them so. If been great fun. Just want to see what others think
has any thing in lost mines made it to the quest board because they didn't do something? Has someone died because of what they are chasing..but aren't?

Itinerant Deputy Shire-reave Tomas Burrfoot - world walker, Raft-captain, speaker to his dead
Toddy Shelfungus- Rider of the Order of Ill Luck, Speaker to Friends of Friends, and Horribly big nosed
Jarl Archi of Jenisis Glade Fee- Noble Knight of the Dragonborn Goldcrest Clan, Sorcerer of the Noble Investigator;y; Knightly order of the Wolfhound
I ended up killing of sildar hallwinter since they never went to check out cragmaw cave. Which in turn made them finding and getting to cragmaw castle a bit harder. Which I kinda regret but I used a hobgoblin band encounter to give them cragmaw castle details. I'm thinking bout killing off rockseeker if they don't check out the castle before heading back to town. But it's a bit in the air.
I've put old owl , wayven Tor, and Agatha into the quest board. But left off thundree tree since it's not so much a quest and info gathering
And I used the mimic in gnomegrad as an agent of black spider who left it there to terrorize the gnomes for not helping black spider in finding Wave echo
If they haven't talked to Sister Gaerelee (forget the spelling), make a request from her to go cleanse the altar at cragmaw castle and placed it on the quest board. Since they enjoy doing the quest board, add it on there.
I did a mix of Volo's Wake mixed with homebrew, with LMoP and Icespire and heading the PoTA. I've changed things up f om Volo's wake and changing enemies and made some to move the story along leading to PoTA.
They have options to do the other quests, but I'll add something new that will have some connection to the other story lines.
Weave them together, even if it is by doing the quest board.
They actually picked up the agatha quest.i didn't even think bout moving it to cragmaw castle nice tip!
If they were just doing icespire they would be doing great. I think the next time I run lmop I'll pase it differently and put icespire towards the end. But it's been a great experience. I've been using side kicks to get some new players interested and they've actually been showing up semi often. So yaay. But forsure like the quest board over all.
I have a party nearing the end of Lost Mines. I've only recently picked up the Icespire adventures, so decided to work them in together, especially to link them into the 3 additional higher level modules included with Essentials. The party has just finished up with Cragmaw Castle, made level 4 and returned to Phandelver. I wanted them to continue through the Mines and perhaps pursue the Dragon after that, when they are level 5 (I have a strong party of 6 PCs so the level isn't too strict).
So.... on their return to Phandalin from Cragmaw, they have just heard rumours of a dragon while having dinner in the Inn. I'm assuming that they will think that it is Venomfang as they had been battling it in Thundertree, but Venomfang fled part way through the fight. Actually it's Cryovain. I haven't given them enough to actually pursue the dragon and I have the Gundren on their case, pushing them to head to the mines next to check on his brothers.
On their return I will get them into Axeholm, the dragon slayer sword or the Manse (or all of them) adding in info as I go, before they have enough to find the dragon. They may have found out enough to realise its not Venomfang by then. Or not...
Once that is done, I will link them into the modules above Icespire (the 3 online ones that were included).
