Hello everyone, I am trying to create a Egyptian themed world with the pantheon found in the Players Handbook. Already I have hit a road block when trying to figure out the topography of the land and some monsters to populate it. If anyone has some suggestions, that would be greatly appreciated 👍.
Do you want your entire campaign to be like that? Or just one adventure? If you want the entire campaign to be in that environment I would just look up some maps of Egypt and the Sahara for inspiration, but if it’s just one adventure I would make a small desert environment with maybe a pyramid. I have more ideas for both that I’ll share if you elaborate
The plan is for the majority of the campaign to be Egyptian themed with small encounters from other surrounding "countries" and nations. I plan to make mimic each nation after an ancient culture or civilization such as Rome or Greece. Thank you for your suggestions.
Ok so if you want the whole campaign I would rely heavily on mummies mummy lords and pyramid dungeons for the beginning of your adventure , and once you clear a couple of those and your players level up then you lean into the gods and their avatars. What I did for one campaign is make it to where the final boss of almost every adventure was a demigod or titan. And then I would also make bandits/ thief's guilds a major problem/ally (not unlike assassins creed). Another question-Is your world gonna be very well populated? Ir is it gonna have like 1 city and a few towns scattered around?
So I plan for their to be a huge city called Abydos, it's citizens are mostly human with some elves and dwarves being the minority. Spotted around the world are Zaratans with towns and small cities on their backs to add a little flavor. But other than that, those are the only populated areas. I like your idea of avatars of the gods and I will definitely work them in. Thanks dude 👍.
In cases like this, remember re-skinning is your friend. If you find a myth with some kind of monster that you think fits the theme of the campaign, but it’s not in the monster manual, just pick something similar that is, and have it look however is appropriate for the campaign world.
Same goes for magic items, weapons, armor, etc. They didn’t have full plate in ancient Egypt, but there was certain to be some kind of heavier protection, you can use that, and just say, mechanically, it’s full plate.
Also considering the mythological fondness for gods with animal heads, you might look into ardlings from the first round of playtest rules.
I like the re-skinning idea, but after doing some Google searches, I couldn't find that many Egyptian monsters other than the deities and a few demons.
So as long as there’s 1 big city then you’ll be able to heavily incorporate the thieves guild idea, you could also have the pharaoh pretend to be hearing directly from the gods, and he uses this as a means to control his people (likely in corrupt ways), and one of your adventures could be overthrowing him (potentially with the help of the “criminals” that are in the thieves guild).

Great plot idea!
