So, my players, five of them, have almost completed Wave Echo Cave. They are currently in room 11. They have been going through the monsters very quickly throughout the adventure, so I made the 5 bugbears into bugbear chiefs instead. With the stronger enemies, and about 7 natural 20s, I had 3 of the 5 players down at one point, including the barbarian. Two characters died outright with one of them brought back with a scroll of revivify. During the battle, one of the bugbears ran and yelled for help. The bugbears from area 18 ran over and confronted the players and fell quickly. The doppelganger, however, ran into room 20 to warn Nezznar.
The players decided to barricade themselves in room 11 and take a long rest.
My request for help is what should I have Nezznar do? I have two options:
1. Nezznar sets up an ambush and waits for the players and a battle ensues.
2. Nezznar sends minions to check to see if the Spectator is still there. When he realizes it's gone, he gets a good look and inspects the forge and realizes that the enchantments it places on items is only temporary and so he decides to leave. He has plenty of time to do this as he has 8 hours.
I am leaning towards number 2 as I want to let the players know that actions, or lack thereof, has consequences. I am a fairly new GM so I thought I might see what others have to suggest.
2 sounds quite logical... think I would be tempted to try and flush them out before they can rest up so as to have that big showdown... oil under the door barricade smoke em out, I take it the flaming skull in area 9/12 (oops had my one move round more) was dealt with so that it didn't rejuvenate after one hour?

Thanks in advance.
3. Nezznar uses the temporary enchantments for option 1. As that will also shonactions, OT lack there of, have consequences. if you break into a mans house, open his gun safe, load the weapons, leave them there, then lock yourself in his garage to sleep. Isn’t it natural the guy checks his gun safe, and uses it if he can?
One of the characters actually put the skull in his bag of holding, just waiting for him to take it out (hehe), after beating it. I did quite a bit of research on whether or not the flaming skull would survive in there.

I like this. I will look further into this. With this option, the players still get some satisfaction and conclusion to the arc, but still get the point across.

OMG! that's one potentially hilarious scene in the making, certainly one your players will be talking about for some time... I love it!

Thank you both.
