Demon possession seems to be a tricky situation in DnD. I'm creating a one shot centered around Demon possession. Evil mage is trying to bring demons into the world and control them by luring them in to bodies of humanoid creatures.
I wanted to know what a demon is capable of after it has possessed an average NPC? Can the creature manifest its true form? Can the demon use his magic that normally the NPC couldn't use or ever be able to use? If there are rules and parameters to demon possession, can I as the creator of the one shot bend some of the rules or make my own?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I only recently started playing DnD and i love being able to create. I already created like 10 characters and even took up making physical dungeon tiles. I'm not a DM but I wanted to create a one shot for maybe other DMs to use.
Standard D&D demons are not capable of possession, so we're in house rule territory here, but the short answer is "It works however you want it to work". Analogous abilities that exist in the game include the Ghost, the Intellect Devourer, and Magic Jar, each of which follows slightly different rules, but you're also free to come up with your own variant rules.

Please keep in mind that possessing a player character will pretty much remove that player from the game while they are possessed.
That is not a very fun experience and if you want to include something like that try to let the player play the demon. E.g. by passing them some notes about the demon's goals, knowledge and personality.
I don't have any intentions of having a player be possessed. Only the NPC's will be possessed as they have been prepped for it through ritual. Only if by some chance is a character kidnapped and has gone through the process will they be possessed. That scenario is highly unlikely. Thanks for the heads up though.
Standard D&D demons are not capable? Would high level demons be able to? I think i read in the monster manual that demons can possess humans. They've also been know to be bound to weapons. It was in their lore from the monster manual.

Demons may be capable of Possession as a matter of lore, but what I believe Panta was saying is that there is not a game mechanic for this in most Demons statblock...this means it’s either up to the DM to homebrew a possession mechanic (several examples of existing mechanics were in a response above) or you need to find a demon who can do this (a Dybbuk can possess a corpse, others may have the Dominate Person spell, etc)

I would add in “dominate person”
