I'm DMing TftYP campaign for my group. We're currently up to the 3rd adventure, The Hidden Shrine of Tomoachan. One of my players wants more RP. To be honest, I'm not a big RP'er but I want to work with him. How can I add more RP encounters, scenarios, etc to the game? Any general advice or any specific advice you have that may apply to this specific campaign that I can easily replace specific encounters/rooms etc?
I know that he is also pretty good with puzzles and riddles and though Tomoachan and the next one, White Plume Mountain, are more puzzle based than others, any advise to increase this further? Whether increasing the difficulties on the puzzles (but not by that much since the other players are ok with basic puzzles/riddles) or even replacing/enhancing other rooms/encounters completely.
One of the issues with older modules (ie ones adapted from AD&D) is that the game was generally played differently back then. While you could RP and there was RP, most of the modules were much more straight dungeon crawls with traps and puzzles. Having adapted some recently, change some of the monsters a bit so that there is a chance for an RP/social encounter instead of everything being combat. You can also add small towns/camps where the characters can interact and get more information.
Ie for Hidden Shrine, perhaps there is a small pirate camp nearby, or a jungle witch doctor with cultists. You could have an explorer whose team was just lost, but who managed to escape (perhaps they abandoned their party). Some of the things in the shrine may have gone mad, or want release, so they may be willing to work with, or provide some form of assistance to the party to achieve that goal.
