So I've written a letter and printed out so when (hopefully) my players loot the big evil undead wizard, they will find this letter. On it is some stuff but mostly, it has a location (Neverwinter) and a name. Nemeia. I know that she is a blue tiefling with white eyes. And some kind of mage I think.... I can't figure out who and how she is. What kind of mage is she? How is she as a person? Etc. She is currently teaching the undead wizard's (that my players are gonna hopefully fight) apprentice. (Undead wizard is called "Ozera Runemaster". Just FYI.) So I would really like some help here. Some nice ideas for a tiefling mage. Thanks in advance! ^^
She loves detective stories, and thinks There's nothing I like more than a good mystery. Wouldn't be opposed to live one (learning magic counts as unraveling a mystery)
She's a bit paranoid, nervous that people will steal her secrets.
Her primary bond is the city of Neverwinter (wether that means opposing or supporting lord Neverember is up to you)
She's very bad at keeping secrets
If you want her to be more morally questionable, she could be perfectly okay with human (or other) experimentation

"What do you mean I get disadvantage on persuasion?"
I don't know, Sneet, maybe because your argument is "Submit and become our pet"?
I'd potentially go down the line of making her some sort of Sorcerer. Maybe even a Wild Magic sorcerer whose experiments have given her unstable arcane abilities that separate her from the standard mage - that's why she's employed as a tutor for the BBEG's apprentice.
As such I'd expect this sort of character to be obsessive and maniacal, but extraordinarily methodical and detailed. Probably a bit of a mad scientist. Perhaps her original experiments started on family members and she became more and more fascinated as they were turned into arcane abominations at her hands. Maybe she's looking to create a 'perfect' monster through experimentation?

If this is the type of mage that the tiefling sounds like to you and you have the Ravnica book, consider the Izzet and Simic backgrounds for details about her that you could glean. I wouldn't expect either to be a perfect fit for her, but they'll help you get some ideas that might fit.
I like the idea of a Tiefling sorcerer. If you have Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, read about the variants to see if any of them sound like her.

I really like that idea. However she is not evil. But that doesn't make this a worse idea. This is a great idea! ^^ I will definitely see if this can be used! ^^ Thank you.

I have both the Tome of Foes and Guildmaster's guide to info barage. I will have to read up on the Izzet & Simic guilds as the book kinda... throws the infomation at ya like a dagger with sneak attack. But a really good idea! Might give me some use since for the book since I haven't understood where exactly this large ass town is xD. Thanks for the tip though! ^^

Oh I do love me some morally questionable characters! ^^
Ravnica is it's own world in the multiverse and comes from Magic: the Gathering. Functionally speaking, it doesn't necessarily exist in the same multiverse that other D&D worlds do, but then none of them do that don't identify each other explicitly in the lore. The DM is free include and exclude worlds as they see fit and then the players are free to buy into the world.

Yeah I remember magic the gathering part, though I did not know that it's a whole world for itself. I thought it was like a small plane kinda like, elemental plane of fire. Or the nine hells. Just no layers it was just that city and whatever else lives there on a baren wasteland. But that explains a lot. So it would be possible to include it like.... say a plane of existance? ^^ Mhhhhm. Nemeia could then be an entry point to that part of the world. Mhh! I love story building sometimes! ^^ Thanks! ^^
My understanding is that planes of existance and worlds are functionally, if not exactly the same thing for the purposes of D&D. I could certainly be wrong there.
I love story building as well. I'm running a current campaign where we added a player to replace a few that we lost when we took a hiatus and I was open to his character being a race from Ravnica and being a planeswalker who had just had his spark ignite and ended up on the Sword Coast. He chose to go Protector Aasimar instead. Tant pis!

Hey to a certain set of people (including himself) Hitler wasn't "Evil"! She doesn't see herself as evil, she is just experimenting, she is a solver of mysteries. To the rest of the world, she is evil, she is mutilating our friends for her twisted purposes, she will kill us all.
Evil is just live spelt backwards, it's all just a matter of perspective lol

Omg. O.M.G. That is a really good set up for a BBEG. Though she is not evil, (maybe a little), but the undead mage they killed was cursed. But I will try my best to remember that live = evil stuff. That is a really really really, REALLY good set up for a evil dude/dudess. ^^

Glad you got some inspiration from us!
The thing I realised recently, on the topic of BBEGs who don't see themselves as 'evil' as such:
I was rewatching Avengers: Infinity War and realised that Thanos is absolutely this. Did you notice how many people he physically kills in that film that is not from necessity? Loki and Heimdall. So far as I can tell, he could easily have slaughtered every one of the Avengers and Guardians, but he doesn't. He defeats them but doesn't kill them because he doesn't see himself as a maniacal villain. He's the hero of his own story - saving the universe by bringing balance. He only kills Gamora and Vision because he needs the infinity stones - and the action brings him no pleasure.
Just something to think about with your villain. :)

I had a villain who knew that she wasn't the good guy, but she had her morals and her ideals and reasons, and she doesn't see a reason why she should give them up when others don't have too. ^^
Glad that we can help the whole evil-live thing I attribute to my dad, who was a driver in the British Army. We have a couple of sayings in our house, mine is "From within chaos comes order!" my dads was "You will never have lived without knowing the devil!" Basically if you spend your whole life concentrating on being so good to get ever lasting paradise (or whatever you believe) you will never actually live. Chaotic Neutral my family lol
I created an NPC who I originally called Ilve (another anagram of evil) who is a tiefling mage in the Izzet League with an Aberrant Dragonmark. I originally made her a victim of House Tarkanan's experiments on young children. Then I made her an insane arsonist who specialized in explosives. Currently, she has familial ties to Cania and goes by the name of Acani Redaught. She is CN and means well, but doesn't always do well. She has invented an improvement to boots of levitation, Boots of Anti-gravitational travel.
Since Tieflings are natural charisma casters I'd suggest Sorcerer or Warlock. Paladin probably isn't her thing.
My personal favorite of the sub-races in the Tome of Foes is Descendant of Levistus, since Ray of Frost is actually a half decent spell and gives ranged damage to classes who normally lack it like Bard or Paladin.
Since she's a blue Tiefling that could also fit with the cold theme. How about the Storm Sorcerer from SCAG? Then build her around cold, water, wind, thunder and lightning spells, avoiding anything that might be considered fire related. She won't fireball the party, but she might lightning bolt them. Maybe some necrotic as well.
As a character, studious, perhaps a bit shy and non-confrontational, but if you upset her she'll come in like a wrecking ball.
Mechanically.
I'm going to assume she's at level 5, but of course you can scale her up as you like.
