Brand new DM getting ready to run my first campaign. Have both the Starter Set and the Essentials Kit. Think it's awesome that Essentials Kit has three additional adventures after DoIP for levels 7-9, 9-11, and 11-13. Want to run those, but chars will only be level 5 end of LMoP.
Have read some threads on combining LMoP and DoIP from the start... tempting, but I don't want to overwhelm myself or my characters with too much going on and too many sidequests (in addition to the ones already presented in LMoP). Toying with this idea and would love to get some feedback on it from those who have run the campaign before.
My idea is to run LMoP as scripted, with the one exception of adding rumors of a young white dragon into the mix (or maybe Venomfang tells them about the white dragon). After the party defeats Nezznar and Wave Echo Cave, they are basically hooked to help eradicate the dragon problem now that the "human" problems in town are taken care of. But before they fight the dragons, they should do two things;
1. Help give the town a place to retreat and hide as attacking the dragons could cause retaliation (DoIP Axeholm mission) 2. Retrieve the DragonSlayer Sword to aid their cause (DoIP Dragon Barrow mission)
After these two missions level them up to 6. They then go and face Cryovain and I level them up to 7 if they succeed.
Then, at level 7, they make their way to Venomfang for the final boss battle of the campaign.
Legend of their slaying the dragons travels to Leilon, and some hook drags them in to Storm Lord's Wrath.
That would work out pretty well. Currently I'm running LMoP and DoIP together for two players. They are about to take care of Nezznar which will close up the LMoP stuff, but they have a few things to finish up before tackling Cryovain. They should end up around level 8-9.
I was planning on ending the campaign there but they are really loving these characters, so I'm thinking about taking Ghosts of Saltmarsh and turning that into Leilon. It would be quite a bit of work to change it up, but I've always wanted to run that campaign.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance!
