One trick - you could design an early encounter/puzzle, as the first room of the lab, where getting voluntarily shrunk is the solution. That way you don't have to force the players into a no-win situation where they are forced into failing a save and might feel frustrated if they try to avoid it and fail - you instead create a situation where they feel clever for figuring out that they can shrink themselves :)
Maybe, like, an entrance room to the lab where it looks like someone's been experimenting on size - some supersized items, some shrunk things, some equipment. But the players know there should be more to this lab, this can't be the only room! So they can find a secret tiny door in the corner, and activate the equipment in this lab to shrink themselves! (Make it so there's a few ways of finding this - old lab notes, a good search/perception. Or just button-mashing on the equipment in the lab.)

Cool idea, I can’t think of anything though. Do they have to make a save when they get hit with the ray?
