I'm a first time Dungeon Master, and I don't own any source-books past the Player's Handbook and the Monster Manual. For adventures, all I have is The Lost Mine of Phandalin. I'm not using the small packet to run my campaign. To fill in all the gaps of this campaign, I'm using the Basic Rules, and Unearthed Arcana to find extra tables to help. I have no knowledge of MTG, or even a full understanding of what it is. Would the plane-shift content be something that I could mix into my games, by mixing in the races to populate villages, and the monsters to have more unique encounters? Is there problems that could arise from using the UA and Plane-shift content? Do I need a knowledge of MTG stories to be able to use the plane-shift resources? Are any of the Dungeon Master centered Unearthed Arcana articles unbalanced in terms of the CR charts in Encounter building(https://media.wizards.com/2016/dnd/downloads/Encounter_Building.pdf), or the downtime activities in Ships and Sea(https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/UA_ShipsSea.pdf) or Downtime (https://media.wizards.com/2017/dnd/downloads/UA_Downtime.pdf)?
You don't really need any knowledge of the setting to integrate those things, or really any knowledge of any world lore. It's your world, you can create anything you like, use any lore you like. Some UA things might be unbalanced, as they are after all playtest content, but you can use your judgement for those things. If you play with them and feel like they're too overpowered or underpowered, you can tweak the abilities to make them just right.
