In my campaign there are 3 runes that tell the location of 3 magical items. BUT I want there to be a trial or something that must be done for each items location to be revealed.
My campaign is Harry Potter based so anything surrounding that world would do great!
I think this is the sort of thing that will fall into place once you get more specific about the types of magic items you have. If it's, for instance, a cloak of invisibility, maybe it's in the center of a labyrinth with invisible walls that the players have to feel their way along and avoid some kind of spectral/ghost type enemies. If it's a stone that resurrects people, maybe the location for that is in a church or other "portal to the beyond" and they have to explore another plane or land of the dead and bring the stone back in the same way that it brings people back from the dead.
I think if you give more context of what details you already know you want in your story, people will be able to give you more advice on this!
Reading the runes does something in addition to revealing the location. One might immerse the reader in a dream. Another might change their form. Another could cause them to speak in reverse. The challenge, then, is to reverse the extra effect, which involves a tiny quest to find the counterspell, going into the dream to let them know it is a dream to wake them up, or convincing the person who can counter the spell to do so.

Assuming the PCs have already found the runes...

I believe I figured it out! Thank you for your suggestions!
