I'm currently running a campaign for first time players. They're level 4 now and I realised I still haven't used a mimic, so I'm going to include one (/some) next session. They have no idea what a mimic is so I'm looking forward to surprising them with it.
I'm in the middle of designing a series of puzzles to gain entry to a pretentious mage society's headquarters, so I thought I'd use mimics for one of them, but I'm stuck for inspiration. Can anyone think of a good puzzle featuring mimics as part of it?
Key mimics. That's all I'm gonna say. Key mimics. Okay, I'm gonna say a little more. Imagine this: the creator of a dungeon places a key for a door needed to progress further into the dungeon behind some guards or traps or whatever. Once the characters complete that, they're free to get the key. Expect they aren't, because a mimic found its way to that area a while ago, saw a shiny key, and decided that players would want to grab the key, so it copied it. When the characters enter, they see the key where it's supposed to be, except it's actually a mimic. The real key is in a corner, its shine masked by dust. Players with relatively good PP can see it, but they'll probably still not be sure which key is right. If they grab the wrong one... well, mimic happens.
