Hi! As the title says, I'm a new DM that just started DMing Lost mines of phandelver and was looking into what to do after this adventure. Tyranny of dragons caught my eyes and I started to look into that campaign. I've heard that HotDQ is quite linear and janky, so I thought that I could maybe just pull a few of the storybeats (the most important ones) from that book and insert it right after LMoP. Since the players will be level 5 after LMoP I need to scale the encounters for that but that shouldn't be too hard. So my question then becomes: Which parts of HotDQ are the most important ones? I have been scimming through the book and Came to the conclusion that I might do chapter 1, 2 and maybe 3. I was then thinking of giving Leosin Erlanthar (the NPC being captured in chapter 2) more knowledge and having him direct the characters to some later chapter and skipping the treasure hunt that is chapter 4. Which chapter could I then "skip" to? Does this sound like a bad idea? Would It be better to just have the characters do some other smaller adventures and dungeons untill they are ready for Rise of Tiamat and using the suggested "adventure hooks" from that book? Any advice or thoughts are appreciated :)
I think a lot depends on what you want to run and how much work you want to put into it. Personally, I always love adventures with dragons or dragon worshipers or dragon hunters, etc. I have not run HotDQ, but I have heard some very mixed reactions from those who have. Most seem to involve plot holes and unbalanced encounters.
Also, you mentioned that your characters would be level 5. Are you planning to take them into Rise of Tiamat? If so, it makes sense to adapt some of the encounters to give them a more consistent overall plot for the campaign.
