I'm currently running two players, a Sea Elf Rogue and a Firbolg Artificer, through Lost Mines of Phandelver. Afterwards, I'm planning on having Sildar recommend the characters go with him to Neverwinter, and speak to Lord Dagult Neverember (Might be a little bit of world editing to say that the Lords Alliance has that direct connection) to learn of some "impending dangers". I'm then gonna have Lord Neverember send the characters on short quests to power level (probably to 10 or 11 ish) and gain some magic items, and then jump into my idea for a homebrew. That's the part I need some help with.
I'm thinking of it as having a sense of story arcs/episodes, or like seasons of a show that are part of a larger series. For instance, one arc, they may be sent to deal with a demi-plane created by a large colony of mind flayers and various psionic related allies, planning to gather forces, invade, and rule over the material plane. Another idea was to send them to take out Asmodeus because he too wants to invade the material plane with his hoard of demons, but after some lore reading, that doesn't seem feasible really..
I'm looking for a good story to start off with that would be good for 11th level players in this theme, and maybe some other ideas for future stories if you'd like to help.
Ok, I assume they have access to the 5th level spell Teleportation Circle, or some other means to Plane jump (and get back safely). If so, they can use any plane as their base, so the Prime plane works just fine. I like to use a plot device called the Chest of Ages. It opens for 24 hours, once every 100 years. It cannot be opened, or accessed in any way, other than in that 24 hour window. You can have your NPC's tell your players that sages have figured it is opening soon and it contains X, which will destroy/ save the world/ give massive power to creature Y, and many parties are looking for it. The Sages believe it is on Plane Z, guarded by creature A and its minions. Your NPC wants the players to find the Chest and bring it back to the NPC.
Park it on some plane you want to have the players explore, and have fun building out the plot.

I love the idea of this! I just can't answer the question of why does this Chest of Ages exist? Answering that would also answer who made it, and then likely where a reasonable place to put it is. Any ideas?

It is a just a plot contrivance. I would say it was made by a god, eons ago. Inside it, well that is up to whatever you as a DM would think is interesting. It could even be empty, and the Sages had it all wrong. It has been bouncing around in the known universe, sometimes popping up. As to a location, well, that is up to you to decide, given where you want to send the players.

Thanks a ton!
Could be interesting if you base them in the astral plane, since that's basically the hub plane for traveling between planes.

That'd be pretty cool, I can definitely see how I can work this in. Thanks for the suggestion!
