My best friend's bday is coming up and she LOVES Narnia. So, I want to surprise her with a Narnia-themed one shot!
I have never homebrewed before, so I'm a little nervous. I would love to pick all of your brains for some ideas.
Its going to be set during the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. They will NOT be humans. So far I think its going to be Aslan has sent them on a special mission to stop a fierce monster/foe from arriving to help the White Witch during the Great Battle.
I will be using 5E, so I'm just thinking of reworking some already existing monsters and peoples of Narnia.
Any ideas, thoughts, etc ARE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED! <3
How about sending them as the group that allows Father Christmas to reach Narnia? That is spoken of in terms of representing a significant weakening of the Witch's power. Perhaps there was a magical barrier spell located in some Northern fortress or tower which must be broken. Aslan has given them the MacGuffin needed to break the spell so they just have to get there. Enemies can be almost anything since the Narnia beastiary matches quite well with D&D. Perhaps the big bad can be one of the Witch's top lieutenants, the equivalent of that Wolf. A talking polar bear, or a minotaur perhaps? The Wikipedia "list of Narnian Creatures" will help.
Heroes are: Faun Bard and leader (only a slight Mr Tumnus feel) which is a reskinned half elf, Centaur warrior type for some muscle (the playable race on this site), small sized talking animal Rogue (reskinned halfling), a dwarf of some description, dryad druid reskinned wood elf, and so on. I feel clerics and wizards are not really very Narnian in feel, but a sorcerer or Warlock might fit in. Good luck
If it's intended to be a one-shot then I would make it more entwined with the original story. Have it set at a similar time to when the children first discover the wardrobe but the party are a strike force sent by Aslan to bring down the White Witch before she can truly enact her plan of eternal winter. They begin their travels with Aslan, at his camp, who briefs them on their mission. Along the way they meet various creatures, they could even meet characters from the books who give them information on the troubles they face and hints at the lore of the books. Agents of the White Witch could waylay them in battles. Minotaurs, Boarmen and other beasts could make up raiding parties that the players must fight in the defense of a northern village.
When the players reach the White Witch's castle they must face her in a final showdown amongst the gardens of her courtyards where they are, one by one, turned to stone. I know this could be frustrating as their fate is some what predestined but it could be seen as a "rogue one" type of story.
Maybe their mission isn't specifically to defeat the witch, but instead steal her scepter. That way it won't be obvious that they will fail in their task.
Perhaps they are amongst the heroes that endeavor to take on the Green Serpent from the Silver Chair. Perhaps they fall, perhaps they get distracted by giants, perhaps they are beaten to it by some kids and marshwiggle. Easy chance to meet several characters.
They could be a group that is fighting off Telmarines at the end of the world. Win or lose they meet Aslan soon after.
They might put down a group of black dwarf, White Witch cultists culminating in the slaying of a not yet fully powerful, embodied Witch. Aslan could again make an appearance here to thank them.
The last remnants of Cair Paravel when Caspian the Conqueror attacks and the party must save as many as possible as they flee. No famous characters of this time, but Aslan could again make an appearance to thank them.
Have the players be Centaurs, Fauns, Minotaurs, Satyrs, and Dwarfs to help the feel. All have official or pretty decent homebrew out there. I am running a campaign with talking beasts, fauns, and centaurs myself. The beasts took more work as I created them from scratch, but are doable.
