Forgive me if I’m posting this in the wrong forum, I’m new to D&D beyond. Ive been trying to set up some for of local group or “hub” for players & DMs in my area to set up new games or introduce new players to ongoing campaigns? Essentially to make new friends and boost the number of players in my area?
I just posted something in meetup for Wednesday nights at a local game store (you need to find a public location). Give it 2-week’s notice, to let people get organized. We had one table the first week (I dm’d it) two tables the second (I recruited a DM from the first table), then three each week after that.
I provided the modules (we ran AL season 5) for the first while.
Be consistent (same location, same time each week)
Focus on welcoming new players
Encourage new DM’s
We eventually outgrew the game store and started playing in a pub, and loving it.
I think VancouverDave summarized the usual approach.
Find a local game store, board games cafe or other venue which has space where you can host events. You will probably have to start off running/hosting something yourself unless you find or know other DMs in your area that would be interested. Some game stores/venues will just be happy for the foot traffic in the store while others may have a sitting fee for the use of space.
Use local digital tools like Meetup to try to advertise. You could also setup a Discord server or similar also targeted at local D&D players and DMs for your area. You can also use sites like Warhorn and similar for scheduling games if it gets busy enough or you have enough interest. Also, put up some fliers at the venue you plan to use. If you are teaming up with a game store they might also be willing to send out a note using their mailing list.
It may be a slow process at first, especially with COVID. You may have to request participants be fully vaccinated or something similar depending on the prevailing attitudes in your local region.
lol, what!? Meetup was effectively butchered years ago - you'll have better luck skywriting imo. I've had decent luck with regular ol' FB.
Just wow. Did you just dismiss my experience entirely? Toxic response award of the day.
For the record, we had 4-6 tables at the pub every Wednesday, as well as a couple of tables in NewWestMinster and a table in North Van every Monday just prior to lockdown.
Also annual charity events raising $2K per.
so yeah, chill with your snark
