So does this mean that we don't get the tough or magic initiate feat for free?
I see in the new rules, those two feats are now background feats.
If they are included in their background, they get it. The DMG will have rules for custom backgrounds and we have to see if AL will allow that, which apparently they have in the past.
So does this mean that we don't get the tough or magic initiate feat for free?
I see in the new rules, those two feats are now background feats.
Origin feats are now associated with a specific background. If you choose that background, you get the feat. See Chapter 4.
For example ... Farmer background gets the 2024 Tough Feat, Criminal background gets the 2024 Alert feat, Scribe background gets the 2024 Skilled feat.
The backgrounds also define which 3 stats you can increase initially with your +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1 at character creation.
Also, the background includes additional equipment/gold or another 50gp so you could start with 200gp total if you take the gold for both class and background.
If you choose a background from the older books that does not include a feat or specify the relevant stats then you can increase whichever stats you prefer by the same values (+2/+1 or +1/+1/+1) and can pick an Origin feat of your choice (pg 38 sidebar). Similarly, if you pick a class or archetype from an older book, you do not receive the archetype features until level 3 even if the older material gave archetype features at level 1 or 2.
In AL rules, players can select tough, skilled, or magic initiate feat at character creation. Under the 2024 rules, it looks like everyone gets a feat from their background, with more choices than just tough, skilled, or magic initiate. I assume the free feat rule is over, since tough, skilled, and magic initiate are now background feats.
Interesting point on the +2/+1 and +1/+1/+1; DnD Beyond lets a player increase the same ability by +2 and +1, for +3 total. I assume it’s a glitch in the app.
Hmm .. I think the option to choose tough, skilled or magic initiate would only apply to 2014 characters. 2024 characters would follow the 2024 rules ... so they either get the feat associated with the background they choose or one of the 10 origin feats in the PHB (which I think include tough, skilled and magic initiate among others), if they select an older background that doesn't have a feat associated with it.
Yep :) I think that is a glitch in the app :)
The app also lets you multiclass 2014 and 2024 sub-classes from the same class - i.e. multiclass 2014 and 2024 classes unless they have fixed that too. It also has trouble producing exclusively 2014 or 2024 characters even if you explicitly toggle on and off the relevant sources ... so I think they still have some work to do :)
When will the pinned post be updated with links? The Players Guide link is still out of date, we're on 14.2 and it's still the 14.0 pdf
Ping someone at D&D Beyond. The AL team apparently has no ability to get updates posted to any web site or links updated on this forum. It wouldn't take more than 10-20 minutes to update the document links but it just doesn't get done for whatever reason. Very frustrating if you happen to be looking for AL documents and have to go on to Discord to try to find the current versions.
Until I saw this thread, I didn't realise that the latest versions of the document were only on Discord (and not in the pinned post). I just thought they had an old version and hadn't got around to updated it yet. Discord is now version 15.1 of the player's guide.
And you can't even add a comment on the guides thread to mention it. (Plus the link to Discord didn't work for me, and I had to find the link in the v14 players guide to get into Discord).
Sly here is a quick and dirty handout which contains the most important information from the players and dm guide.
The following books can be used to create your pc but only the player character chapters for the Realms. My question: now that starting wealth is just a set number, not rolled, will new characters be allowed to buy starting equipment?
Asking because I want to play a paladin that would not function well with a Paladin's default start equipment.
from 2024 Choose A or B: (A) Chain Mail, Shield, Longsword, 6 Javelins, Holy Symbol, Priest’s Pack, and 9 GP; or (B) 150 GP
So choose B and go shopping, and don't forget the shampoo and conditioner for your paladin. You can't smite unless your hair is a delight!
