Hi, as the title states I’m a brand new dm and I’m hoping to get a session going for me and 4 of my friends. They’re on board but no planning has been done yet. I’ve been a part of one campaign that stretched on for a year. The thought of being a dm always intimidated me but I think I’m at a point where I’m ready to charge at it. Last year I backed a Kickstarter called magic items unchained that came with several custom magic item cards that I thought looked cool. I had also heard of the tarot initiative tracker and was planning on getting that. What I wanted to ask is if you guys had any suggestions for cool dnd Kickstarter campaigns that really improved your dming or player experience. Any advice is welcome. Thanks 😊.
I figure I'll do something of a one shot to get them introduced to it. (they're newer so I should reasonably be able to bullshit)
Also if you have any tips to keep your players engaged that's something I want to focus on aswell.
I'm also obviously brand new to the forum so I'm sorry if this is in the wrong spot.
Have a session 0 to discuss preferences, character creation etc.
Are you playing live or online? If online then dndbeyond works great for character sheets if you have access to the sourcebooks.
Roll20 is a pretty decent online table top simulator. I would still have the character sheets in dndbeyond and use beyond20 to connect between the two.
I've recently been playing around with World Anvil. Its pretty cool if you are into world creation.
Use your resources! Dndbeyond has a system the determines how difficult encounters are for custom parties. That way, you don't end up TPKing them (or getting TPKed) within one round. Monster stats and running the game mechanically are probably the least difficult parts of DMing. Writing a story is the most stressful. Worldbuilding is hard, so don't give up.
This is definitely the right spot. Some quick advice:
As long as everyone is having fun, you're playing the right way. There's no wrong way to play D&D if you're all enjoying it.
If you don't remember a rule in the middle of a session, make a ruling and move on. Don't bog down the game looking it up. After the session, check the rulebooks and tell your players what the rule will be from now on.
If you have a problem with a player, discuss it out of the game. Attacking their character won't help.
Have a Session Zero to lay down house rules and set up the basics of your setting. Make sure that you discuss any boundaries your group might have.
If you're not enjoying DMing, take a break and play something else, or let one of your players take a turn behind the DM screen. No D&D is better than bad D&D.

I'm running my players through some pre-made modules, and I use this site to answer questions about the world of Faerun that aren't elaborated on in the modules themselves.
These sites look awesome actually. I had no idea they existed. Thank you I'll definitely book mark these. I want to flesh out my own world so I'll mess around with these. I've been big into story telling and voice acting pretty much all my life. So I have my base set down. I just need to hone my world building skills and thinking on my feet.

This is probably the easiest-to-use map maker I've seen online. Great for throwing together a quick dungeon map in case you need one for any reason.

And now you too can play with the amazing art and assets we use in Roll20 for our campaign at Hazel's Emporium
Wow that's awesome! That will definitely come in handy thanks for the advice!

Find some DMs Guild level one modules and either run those, or steal from them.
