I’m considering a campaign setting for a future campaign that is set in a bustling city underwater. It’s a bit like Atlantis, with the city being an island that had sunken underwater (due to the fantasy equivalent of global warming).
Im trying to figure out how to modify different races, and adjust the traits to fit how they would evolve after living underwater.
What I have so far is that air and water genasis are now one of the human equivalents (the other being tritons), because of the amphibious nature of water genasis and the air genasi’s ability to hold their breath for infinite amounts of time. Races similar to tabaxi and arracockra are either rare or nonexistent, and any race that would have a difficult time swimming are also rare or nonexistent. Shifters are now separated into different aquatic creatures rather than bears, cats, dogs, etc.
If there are any suggestions for more adjustments (lore, racial traits, etc) that would be great! I’ll also make homebrews of the different variant races after I figure out most if anyone wants to use them :)
Any race incapable of breathing underwater have underwater suits or spells? Could make for a fun "oxygen factory" storyline where a murder occurs because someones suit was damaged and they drowned? Some mystery, puzzle solving, dungeon crawling down the line.
You could give them a big bubble over the city so everyone can breathe normally. Like the gungan city in phantom menace. PCs are fine in the city, but when they inevitably need to leave, they’ll need to figure out how to breathe on their own. Set the first few adventures in town so they can level up and acquire some of the tools.

That’s a great idea! I want the campaign and it’s prologue one shot to have a kind of detective/mystery story flair, so I think that would be a fantastic first plot hook!

I like this thought. Makes me think of the Gungan city from Star Wars.

Pull a page from Spongebob and have Tabaxis in dive suits. Cats fully submerged in water sounds like it could get a laugh around the table :)
