A Shadowfell - Raven Queen - Keepers of the Feather - Domain of dread (house of lament) - Question
I've market spoilers to the House of lament but they are super minor spoilers
I'm just starting Van richten's guide to ravenloft house of lament with my players
In the open scene the adventures encounter a
wereraven of the Keepers of the Feather and find wereraven feathers
while the characters don't have any background that would connect this to
The Ravenkind and The Keepers of the Feather
I'm thinking they may make a connection to the Raven queen of the shadowfell, So I'm wondering do you think it's a good or bad idea to introduce some semi connected lore ie The Raven Queen that is actually a false leed so to speak
“It cannot be seen, cannot be felt, Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt, It lies behind stars and under hills, And empty holes it fills, It comes first and follows after, Ends life, kills laughter.” J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again
How clever are your players? It can be good introducing a red herring now and again if you feel your players will eventually see past it, but I have found players don't always think like you do. It also depends on how you do it. If you are willing to have story ready if they decided to go off after the Raven Queen, with little clues along the way telling them otherwise, then that's fine, but if you are just going to have it 'oh you think its the raven queen, have fun doing nothing' then I don't think it is a good idea.
These kinds of things must be planned carefully, but if you can pull them off, it can be great fun.
Thanks for the reply TheOneWhoHasNoIdeaForAName Well technically this is within The Mists on the border of the little Dread domain that is The House of Lament so there isn't any going off after the Raven Queen... getting to the shadowfell propper would probably be a vast improvement of their situation though the players nor their characters are currently even aware they are no longer on the prime material plane anymore...
To be honest there isn't much more I can think of within the house of lament adventure regarding the Keepers of the Feather its more a introduction of a ravenloft faction that is active across the Domains of Dread as understand I it from the adventure...
*Oh yeah and I like to think my players are pretty smart ;)

If it is just introducing them as a faction then I see no reason why you can't add some mystery using the players uncertainty of what the feathers actually mean. Just make sure they have access to the lore of both groups, in some way so they can make their own mind up.
Yeah The House of Lament offers 3 different sets of Travelers of the Mists which you can include in the adventure and I was thinking of running it with Rudolph Van Richten, he seems like a potential lore bomb if the players are inclined to follow up those leeds even the house itself hints at a mass of tombs and treatise on the arcane and mystical... and to be honest both the raven queen and the keepers of the feather seem to be shrouded in mystery, half the stuff I read about the raven queen as I understand it was erased from the collective memory by the gods!?! so I guess I can't include any of that which left me rather bemused. thanks again for your reply TheOneWhoHasNoIdeaForAName
