So.... yeah, this one's a doozy. A few days ago, me and my friend had the crazy thought, "What D&D classes would the Muppets be?" We had a good laugh thinking of crazy things, (Beaker the Barbarian was one we came back to often), and eventually we thought about a Muppets D&D campaign. Fast forward two days, and he was playing as Kermit the Ranger and Fozzy the Bearbarian. I still can't believe this wacky idea came so far that we were playing a Muppets Campaign. Heck, I even made characters of all the major Muppets, from Rizzo the Rat to Sam the Eagle. I think this campaign will be very fun to play in the future.....
....that is, if I can think of a good story. The story is the one detail I'm stuck on: I can't think of anything that fits the Muppets aesthetic, but is also more meaningful and satisfying than an SNL sketch. Do you have any good ideas for an adventure that fits?

Think of a lot of the muppet movies: they're just [thing the Muppets are spoofing] with the joke being that many of the characters are played by Muppets. Muppet Treasure Island, Muppet Christmas Carol, Muppet's Wizard of Oz, etc.
My suggestion would be to make it a spoof adventure. Take a movie, book, or comic you like (maybe even a published adventure) , steal the whole plot, and let your Muppet players loose to spoof it just through their sheer muppet-ness.
Muppet Lord Of The Rings, Muppet Game Of Thrones, Muppet Knights Of The Round Table, etc, the possibilities are endless.
The plot of the original Muppet Movie would make for a decent campaign. Your party is approached in a tavern and told that they could make it big if they make it across the continent, so they set out on a journey across the land, getting into hijinks along the way. You could make the various events reference not only the original film, but events of the show and other franchise.
One other thing that could be fun. As DM, you could also play the part of Statler and Waldorf, using your metagame information (they'd be in the "audience watching the player play") and heckling the players throughout the entire campaign.

That sounds great! And maybe as Kermit and Fozzie (I've been spelling it Fozzy for the longest time) travel, they meet other Muppet adventurers like they do in the movie! Also, the Statler and Waldorf idea is AMAZING! What if they were the two BBEGs?

I don’t think you need them as BBEGs - their characters tend to exist outside of the plot, sitting in the audience of the theatre, making fun of the characters for their actions without contributing either positively or negatively. They would still very easily be able to make the exact dialogue you propose - they would have meta information the party does not have. From the meta perspective, it would be like your party is live streaming their campaign, and Statler and Waldorf are watching the livestream and commenting on it.
So what if it's an SNL sketch! Wayne's World!? Church Lady!? Daily Affirmations with Stuart Smalley!? Absolutely!
Lothar of the Hill People would be a great fit for Beaker the Barbarian and Kermit the Bard. Miss Piggy's got to be a monk with all the punching and judo tossing she does!
Seriously any idea will float for this. Hensen Studios has covered a ton of content since the 70s with muppets and voice actors. Star Wars (all about fascism and rebellious freedom), Dark Crystal (all about corruption of power), Sesame Street (I mean, there's a ton here alone), Fraggle Rock (episodic form of adventuring and discovery), Labrynth... the list continues. I don't think that there is a topic that can't be covered by muppets or muppet based characters. The challenge might be to keep it light-hearted enough to be muppet-ish without it being to "Gonzo" and to allow for some moments or beats of darkness to allow the bright points to shine through even brighter.
I might agree that Stadtler and Waldorf would be the NPCs that the DM would use to help steer the party away from shenanigans and poor decisions while not being part and parcel of the storyline themselves. They were the critics of the show.
