Just to bounce ideas off a wall of DMs...(new DM, mabye 2 months (2 sessions))
Villan idea: Have a very charismatic and strong NPC who will hopefully become the parties new "best friend" or at least he is going to try to do that. Then after mabye a while of role play dialogue and mabye a small adventure/couple encounters with him playing with the characters (me being careful to keep the focus on the PCs cause I'm playing DM not Player and get to play all the other characters) have him develop a solid relationship with the group.
Then on one adventure, have him suddenly die to a trap in a dungeon. But this is a trap he set and knew would happen, so he can avoid the trap and runs off to continue his plan of taking over the local mjor town by controlling the war cult of Orcs or enslaving a dragon or whatever.
His death serves 2 purposes, to shock my players into realizing death in my world can happen at any time and swiftly, (though I wouldn't do something like that to a PC) so they start taking my challenges more seriously and add some healthy paranoia. Also to allow my villan to escape the players conscience and lay low for a while, then when enough time has passed, come back as an Evil hooded figure or something where you can't see his face. Then have the PCs think they are chasing a new NPC they haven't met before and as they kill him, (hopefully they do, but they might die) his helmet/cloak falls off and... IT'S THE GUY.
Idk I think that would be kinda cool. Any thoughts, things I could expand upon? Things to change? Ways to get him involved with the party in the first place? Thanks guys
