Joey joins the Yoga cult because of the charismatic young lady who has not only nice words.. while Chandler uncovers, the monolithic financial root of the Yoga-mat cartell which is fired by the charismatic female leaders of the cult. Monica and Rachel are reluctant to join the cult, because they are much to self aware and don't want to see their asses exposed on television but Phoebe writes a song about Yoga-Cat and stirrs even more confision. In the end, the cult convinces Joey, that Yoga is the greatest deed ever done to mankind and he begins to follow more closely while Chandler, Monica and Rachel make Phoebe cry because they don't like her song and post bad posts about Yoga on Metacritic - which in the end brings the cartell down :D
In the meantime, Ross marries again and is ditched in the wedding night. Fadeout...
Sorry.. I couldn't resist.
You won't sell this without a celebrity cameo - I'm thinking Elminster moves into the dungeon downstairs and is mistaken for a yeti and Monica accidentally maces him (a real mace !)....****y to find out that underneath the beard he is actually Matthew Mercer....
The way I made my cult non-cliche was making them not directly evil. Despite, ya know, being a cult, they didn't really intentionally hurt the outside world. The only issue that the players had with them was that they were poisoning the nearby waters-completely unintentionally, and, when spoken to, stopped.

For god's sake. Find a hobby or something. Sheesh. Please stop using this font.
I am running a campaign where the gods have disappeared and gone silent. There is a cult I've created, The Ancient Ones, as they are called by others, who want to bring them back. This sounds like a great thing to do but there reasons and tactics are a little different. They plan to create devastating wrecks to catch the attention of the gods and they do this through other groups and peoples not affiliated with them. They keep the blood off of themselves to look good. They control others through politics, force, and magical means, all while barely being heard of and keeping things quiet.
Their main drive to bring the gods back is for power. They believe that if they summon a powerful demon and create a huge illusion of a villain and danger to the world that they can catch the gods attention and take their power and throne with the army they've created.
When the PC's encounter them, they will keep their plotting well hidden and act like they want the gods back for the good of all not just self power. They also do believe they can rule better than the old gods.
I don't know if this or any version of it would work, but here it is.
What about a Lawful Good cult that's plotting to purge the unlawful from the world. The only problem? They're like the Punisher, you break any laws? Death. Jay walked? Death. Robbed a store 5 years ago and got caught, served your time, got reformed? They don't care--Death. Didn't know swearing in the temple was illegal? DEATH.
Now that I'm typing it it sounds more lawful evil, but hey, that's devils' jam.
Maybe a cult that believes that magic is the source of all corruption and misfortune in the world so they try to eradicate all mages and clerics from their world.
What's wrong with the cliché cult though? I honestly prefer that than some bad guys who were just misunderstood and were not really bad at all. Takes away that whole feel of Good vs Evil, but essentially diluting or deleting evil.

Go for strange and incomprehensible goals.
The cult wants to own every ruby in the world and make possession of rubies by anyone else illegal.
The cult wants to eliminate the colour blue from the world.
The cult wants to force everyone in the world to speak only gnomish.
I straight up wrote this as a campaign before seeing this thread hahah
A cult that uses envy to attract more members. So many benefits, for a price.
"Cult of Rakdos"
From Guildmaster's guide to Ravnica if you want to plug something in that is already very fleshed out and has lots of art and lore.
