The title all but sums up my idea, but here's a bit more meat on the bone:
I want to make a Fable game. You pick whatever race you like, but refluff it as a duck, a badger, a squirrel, any animal you like. And play as that. In a world where animals talk. And humans are legendary creatures of a world long gone. In other words, there are zero of the expected races. No elves, humans, goblins or aarakocra. Instead, the white rabbits inhabit the Principality of Greensprout, on the lowlands. The badgers have scattered fiefs, mercenary realms controlled by a voivod called a Grump. The wolves are the lords of the Grey Lands, northern forests and tundra. And so on, bla bla, all anthropomorphised so everyone has hands with opposable thumbs, and can wear heavy armor if their class gives them proficiency.
So. Feedback.
Is this idea terrible, or good, and why? Would you play?

Blanket disclaimer: I only ever state opinion. But I can sound terribly dogmatic - so if you feel I'm trying to tell you what to think, I'm really not, I swear. I'm telling you what I think, that's all.
What you're describing is basically Humblewood with some homebrew to remove the other races!
It's an excellent supplement to dnd, I am playing as a hedgehog named Dusty, who does fire magic in a campaign. It has humanoid hedgehogs, badgers, foxes, and so on, and it also makes it clear you can reflavour anything as anything (EG replace a hedgehog with a pangolin) provided it makes sense!

How very interesting - I had no idea something like that existed.
I'm very much a homebrew worlds kinda guy, and I like the build-a-bear approach where each player can pick any race he fancies and slap any animal on that. Like .. 'my grumpy badger is built on dwarf stats' seems satisfyingly textbook to one player, where a rabbit barbarian might feel amusingly meta to another.
If I had some sort of free preview, I'd absolutely check Humblewood out. But sadly, I'm not about to pay full price to see if I like it =D

I've done this! I played Pawscal of House Tamias, chipmunk (high elf) wizard. It was funny cause we were doing kind of a game of thrones thing but all playing rodents.

Why not just use the existing animal races? There’s a ton of them that cover almost any animal a person could be.
Because they're pretty much universally bad?
I'm not exactly a fan of expansions. I loathe dragonborn and basically any race added after entirely without reservation. Of course, everyone knows tieflings are cool and awesome, but otherwise .. definitely not my cup of tea.
Obviously, your point has merit. You are completely right. Except I'm not the guy for that =)

No, the dragons were eagles and hawks. The tarrasque was a cat.
I imagine eagles and hawks as player races (although I feel they'd propably be flightless?!). How I'd portray a dragon or tarrasque equivalent I'm not quite sure about. Maybe some remnant of human civilisation?

So ... this really isn't a shameless selfbump, but simply to note that 70% think this is the best idea ever. Which is insane, and propably only slightly helped along by the fact that there's only the one positive option to vote.
Thanks for your votes and feedback, everyone =)

Ha! Awesome.
Were the dragons still dragons?
