Im looking for a few ideas for introducing a mini antagonist? I am running CoS and was looking to add a bit if homebrew? I had a character in a previous campaign where I was a player, they went evil and were meant to get a cool send off down the line. Unfortunately the campaign is on indefinite hiatus so I decided they ended up in Barovia long before the party. I had planned a wee murder mystery but as is so often the case the party threw a major spanner in my plans, which I love as it was loads of fun for everyone but now wee murder mystery feels anticlimactic. Vallaki is about to explode and I was planning the murder to happen before but now it’ll happen afterwards when the party may have left vallaki by then.
in the previous campaign they came into contact with a cursed artifact and end up following Leviticus so left the party. I decided they become a warlock with leviticus as their patron and they are trying to return to the real world. Originally the murders were going to be part of a ritual to summon leviticus power to planeshift out of barovia, I don’t think this will work anymore.
so I’m looking for a way to introduce them down the line? The party have already met them but only as an npc.
I think you could move this character to the Amber Temple. There's a lot of magic stuff there that they could be trying to tap into in order to escape and draw more power for themselves. You could maybe replace Vilnius with this character... have them pose as an ally briefly, maybe reveal that they're trying to accomplish some kind of sacrifice and are deliberately leading the players to their deaths in an effort to unlock more power for themselves.
I like that, I could maybe replace one of the vestiges with something related to leviticus. It would possibly require a boost to my old character, something a bit more dangerous to challenge them at that point. I’m assuming he has the warlock gift of many faces so they’d be able with to steer the party towards the temple by taking on multiple guise.
This could be quite interesting as the party is getting steered in one direction by Strahd and another by my old character which hopefully won’t be confusing but might get the party second guessing themselves
thanks for the idea.
