I'm building up to running Salvage Operation, and after each player's session 0 I'm realizing that they put out some very serious damage. They will have a few healing potions, but no real healer other than a Paladin with Lay on Hands. They also have no spellcasters.
There is a Paladin, a 2H weapon fighter, and a Blood Hunter.
How would you (or, would you) beef up the monsters and encounters to deal with such heavy gunfire?
You don't mention the character levels - if they are level 4 then they may have some trouble since there are several encounters on the ship and this party has very limited healing resources though the paladin has lay on hands as well as cure wounds available.
Also, if they are level 4 then their damage output isn't usually much different from any other class. Some feats like polearm master or crossbow expert can increase the damage output though. In tier 1, unless the character has some exceptional stats or some other way to increase their to hit rolls, GWM tends to be less effective since the -5 to hit really matters.
At level 5, there is a significant bump in damage due to Extra Attack though. However, even then, some critical hits by the opponents can swing the fight quickly and all of the available healing requires the character to use their action to get the other character back up - and the odds are pretty good they may go down again on the next round if they are hit.
So, I would tend to judge the encounters based on how they seem to be going and then possibly adjust the later ones by adding reinforcements. There are enough spiders hiding about that having extras wouldn't usually be surprising.
