Pretty new DM and have a game tomorrow, in researching the next part of the story/game I have had a complete lapse in remembering some basics...
Could you explain exactly how to play out the following (which is from a module)
Three Redbrand ruffians are resting in this room. If they hear a good deal of noise in area 1 (including loud voices or barrels being rolled around), they prepare themselves for a fight and try to surprise intruders.
Player A has a Passive Perception of 13.
What do I do to see if the Ruffians surprise them?
Could you break it down, as in:
DM rolls for the Ruffians vs players Passive Perception...but what does he need, LESS than the player Perception I guess? The RBR have no stealth skill I see? They roll Dex?(14, so plus 2?
Also same for players surprising a monster. Player rolls on stealth..they have to beat monsters passive perception?
Yeah, the factor is meets and/or exceeds. If the Ruffians Dex (Stealth) roll is equal to or lower than the player's Passive Perception, then the player will notice them and no be surprised. If it is higher, then the player will be surprised.
Anytime a monster stat block does not call out a specific skill, just use the relevant stat bonus.

Thanks...finding it so hard to keep up homework on the story of LMOP as a new DM AND remember the basics I learnt right at the start.
So a RBF rolls on Dex (gets +2) and if he gets higher
than the player with 13 Passive Perception he surprises the player? Straight forward enough but so much to remember.
Thanks again.
Using the pre made chars...it feels odd that the Rogue has only 10 Passive Perception...with the Warrior having 13. I would have thought the Rogue might be more 'aware' but Im wrong

It's mostly because the pre-made Rogue didn't put their skill Expertise feature in Perception. It's likely in Stealth or their Lockpick Tool proficiency. If it was in Perception instead, then their Passive would be higher due to getting double proficiency to it.

Thank you and sorry for the silly questions.
