Ok, so I was chatting away to myself on the way home from work yesterday (as I do) and roleplayed out a scenario with a devil which ended in a twist which I would like to share!
The encounter all revolves around 2 specific things happening, but I think that they have a chance of happening.
In a game of dice, one of the players has half of their soul lost to a devil, or a fey. This can happen at any gambling establishment, or a wanderer, or could have been due to a trick or deal they made. In any case, they need to lose half their soul to the devil/fey.
The party will doubtlessly confront the aforementioned powerful being, who will offer them a deal:
"I have half of this persons soul, but I will offer you a deal. In exchange for half of their soul, I am willing to offer you a task to perform for me. There is a dungeon to the west, in which there is a small hammer of magical capabilities, that I desire. It is well within your capabilities to collect and return to me. What do you say?"
If they try to clarify, then the devil/fey will say that they are not in the habit of repeating themselves, do we have a deal or not?
If they accept, then they will go off and find this dungeon, make their way through the traps and monsters, and then collect the hammer, which has the ability to make people laugh if tapped with it. Something inane and not exactly game changing.
They will return, and the fey/devil will be pleased to see them:
"Ah, you wasted no time in completing the task, I see! That is truly wonderful!"
They will likely then try to hold out with a "give us his soul back before we give you the hammer" sort of thing, and the devil/fey will be taken aback:
"Give you their soul back? No, no, that was never part of our agreement! I offered to give you a task in exchange for half of their soul, and you agreed - and our deal was settled, then and there."
They will show a jar or statue or some token of physical proof of their soul.
"See, I now have their entire soul, and you had the task that you exchanged it for. It was a fair deal!"
(Expect general party clamouring and potential violence here)
"Okay, I can see that you are etremely interested in taking ownership of this soul. What might you offer me in exchange for it?"
The party can then make a deal - this may be the completion of a task, gold, items, or promises. The Devil will not have any further dealings with the soulless character, however.
On completion, the devil/fey hands the physical soul to the character who made the deal.
"There you are, one soul, as promised."
However, they will not be able to just reabsorb the soul - It will require a magical force to reinstate them.
"The soul's not yours, it belongs to them now. That's a binding magical contract, it's in my blood to make them. If you want to give the soul to them, you need to follow the rules, my friend! But for now, I am bored of you - ciao!"
The devil/fey then disappears, leaving one party member in possession of the other party members soul, and no immediate way to transfer it back!
I wil lconfess to genuine evil laughter when I finished concocting this. Mad? Not at all. Honest!
Oh my god that is genius! I wish I could use it! The only problem is my players get easily stressed and probably wouldn't cope well. But I will definitely keep this idea for later on!

Why do ships ship cargo and cars carry shipments? Why do we have fingertips but not toetips and can tiptoe but can't tipfinger. These are all the questions of the universe.
