I’m using Prisoner 13 (tweaked a little) as a one shot in my campaign. I was wondering how DM’s award XP in this adventure. We just finished LMoP and we’ve been awarding based on CR values. And suggestions are welcomed.
You could use milestone leveling up. As the campaign I'm using does that, levels up players after each chapter. I don't know about prisoner 13 but you could maybe level up after the players achieve something important. E.g. Work out part of the plot or defeat one of villains in it. Decide how much you want the players to level and then just pick key events that seem a good big achievement to level the players up.
Example; you want the players to gain 3 levels through out the adventure. Pick 3 parts throughout the adventure where they level up to the next level.
Hope that makes sense and perhaps helps.

I have always played by giving xp by the amount shown on the monster statblock. I am curious about the alternatives.
Me too. Although most of this adventure is based social interaction, stealth, skill checks, etc.
Any suggestions???
