Hi I'm preparing to DM SKT but I'm getting abit confused with leveling up. I understand that it uses milestone level up and players level up at the end of chapters or big events. It's just chapter 3 is causing me issues as its a big open world sandbox chapter. Do I only level up when Harshnag arrives to lead them to chapter 4? Should I switch to xp leveling up? Do I just wing it and after the players have done some quests, I level them up?
I feel like the group I'm playing with will want to spend an age going round places. They like exploring. So not leveling them at all seems silly.
Any tips or advice would be great or if I have stupidly missed something in the SKT book that tells me please let me know. Thanks
I think the intent is that your players should have reached the specified level by the time they progress onto the next story point. There shouldn’t be any problem with them having reached that level earlier in that sandbox time. However, if you allow them to level-up beyond the recommended level, e.g. by awarding XP, then you’ll probably need to put a fair bit of effort into upping the challenge of the encounters they face later in the story.
OK. So I could level them up about half way through sandbox chapter if I feel its needed. But then just don't level them up at the end of the chapter. That makes sense and seems an easy option instead of xp leveling up.
