I'm running my first DND campaign on Saturday and am stuck on one of the encounters. How did you narrate the centipede encounter for those familiar with the one-shot? The centipedes are supposed to try to drag players into the well. However, even as Giant Centipedes, they are still reasonably small creatures, so I suppose my question is, how would they accomplish this? Maybe I'm just thinking of this too literally. This is my first actual DND experience, so I'm not overly familiar with any of the creatures.
They try to reduce the player to 0 at which point that player will be paralyzed but alive and the centipedes try to drag off who they can, probably with a preference for smaller and lighter weight party members. If a party member is knocked out the rest of the party will need to watch/rescue them or kill the centipedes, otherwise they risk that party member being taken later.
It's fairly unlikely some one dies but if you want and the whole party is knocked out by the poison or some one dies then draw straws or use some other random method to choose one person to die then that person can play a character sent down to help them. Those who do die can pick a stock level 1 sheet from a website like https://olddungeonmaster.com/2020/06/03/dd-5e-quick-play-character-sheets-rev-8/ so they can keep playing. Otherwise they can wake up later with the centipedes having failed to drag them in.
On an unrelated note. I also think the rats should flee after a single hit because they're health is so low and they are some what normal animals. It also reduces the chance of party members dieing to the rats who while weak could easily down people if they gang up on them. They're also some what of a hook for the players to explore further so they can lead the players further in by heading in that direction.
Thank you! I will keep that in mind. I ended up moving the laboratory to room 2 and got rid of the trap so after the party handles the rats they will have the potions to help keep them alive through the rest of the ruins. Since they are just a party of two.
