Huh. There's enough inspired evil in this thread to make me want to get thoughts on a mimic encounter I created for CoS.
I decided that the hags at Old Bonegrinder were sort of boring (though also a probable TPK if encountered early), so I was considering some changes to the area to make it more distinctive. One of them was mimics. The basic idea is:
Near the fork in the road is a lidded container with two separate lids (like a trash bin). One side is labeled Clothes, the other is labeled Toys. Beneath both labels is written "for Needy Children", and below that "Donations Welcome". The Clothes bin contains poor quality clothes, and Toys bin contains Blinsky toys. If the PCs ignore the container, or leave a donation, they get ignored. If they search casually, they find a couple of loose coins. If they go diving in to find more coins, the mimic tries to eat them.
I feel like it could use some additional spicing up, though.
Regarding Spice Breath, a creature can't use its action to end the blindness as it is incapacitate, and can't take actions.
Spice Breath (Recharge 5–6). The mimic exhales a cloud of powdered spices in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or become unable to breathe, while coughing uncontrollably. A creature affected in this way is blinded, incapacitated, and suffocating. As long as it is conscious, a creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on it on a success. The lesser restoration spell can also end all these effect on a creature. A creature can also spend an action to clean the powder out of their eyes, ending the blinded condition.
Regardless of the result of its saving throw, a creature in the area of the spice breath smells strongly of pumpkin spice for the next 3 hours. Creature attempting to detect the creature have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks relying on smell.
Normally true, which is why the exception to rule as usual is specifically stipulated in the ability. If you believe that granting the players a chance to use an action to end the effect would make the encounter inappropriate for their party's level, you are free to remove it. The intent with this monster was to have it inconvenient rather than deadly, which would make it more appropriate for insertion as a holiday encounter for any campaign, regardless of level. A DM is free to use or modify the creature as they see fit to better suit their intent for it.
Hey big fan of your mimic creations and am currently working on a giant spider mimic and want to know if you would approve of me posting a link in this forum seeing as this is probably the biggest collection of mimics on the site.
Thank you for responding. Anyway here it is the Giant spider mimic I planed to have it finished but I can't think of a description or lair actions (I can do away with the lair but as neither mimics nor spiders are known for their adventurous behavior I thought it was fitting) and probably need a second opinion one some of the stats. Also can Mimicromicon, the Mimic Book of Mimics (also: Supreme Sage of Mimic Wisdom, Greatest Read Ever, Totally Adorable Bedtime Story, and Best Friend to Humankind) bud and transform still as they would be a great partner for a character I'm working on a doubleganger with everything they own really be a mimic.
Hm. Not sure what a giant spider mimic is supposed to look like when it's not being a mimic, or what stuff it's supposed to mimic. I'd be tempted to replace its webs with mimics (I mean, mimics are sticky anyway). Something like:
Silk Mimic: a silk mimic is a mimic that takes on the form of a textile, rather than the more common hard objects of other mimics. When found in in wilderness areas, they form webs that can easily be mistaken for spider webs, but when more accustomed to humans they are likely to take on the forms of clothing, rugs, and the like. In general they have similar stats to a Rug of Smothering.
I was thinking the web was make of the Adhesive, I'm thinking it looks more like a spider then a mimic For a couple of reasons giant spiders are weaker then mimics and this mimic is already far stronger than a normal mimic, so baiting low level adventurers that have rations give it a decent amount of food with their other items it can offer them if adventurers stronger than it the mimic attacks it can negotiate for it's life.
So what happens if a Tiny mimic intentionally get itself swallowed by an adventurer? They’re amorphous, and immune to acid damage, so would they be able slowly eat away at the person without much danger to themself? Or would it be more like the Swarm of Rot Grubs on page 208 of Volo’s Guide?
They could be like a parasite, just eating the stuff that enters your stomach, making it so you can't gain nutrition from food, and will starve to death.

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
They aren't mimics, but I designed a monster with that exact situation in mind: the intent to be eaten by a player only to eat the character from the inside out: jelly shark
I cannot begin to express how much I ADORE this thread and everything you have created. Any plans to "publish" this all as a PDF, or just leaving it on the site here?

honestly, i thought about a mimic that pretends to be a merchant that just wanders through town with a cloak. It doesn't have a face, and when people get to close to its back, a mouth opens and eats them.

Thank you Honestly I would love to play as a mimic.
I love this! Thank you for creating this masterpiece of new devious plots for my group...

Sure: the more the merrier. If anyone can get any use of these monsters, it makes creating them all the more worth it.

When I read "spider mimic", two images come to mind: Boxxy T. Morningwood (Everybody Loves Large Chests) and this image.

this is awesome, if I ever do mimics(which is very likely now) I will definitely use this.
